For travelers in Northern New York, some of the best cruise experiences are already within driving distance, waiting in places like New York City, Boston, Baltimore, Montreal, and beyond.
Once you start looking at cruises this way, something changes.
No airport chaos. No extra hotel nights you didn’t plan for. No juggling flights, transfers, and luggage across multiple stops. Just load the car, hit the road, and let the vacation begin.
Because while where you’re going matters… how you get there can completely change the experience.
Here are 8 cruise ports that are just a day’s drive from Northern New York.
New York City, NY: Manhattan Cruise Terminal
New York City is one of the most popular cruise departure points on the East Coast, offering sailings to destinations like Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Canada & New England.
Norwegian Cruise Line regularly sails ships such as Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Joy from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.
One of the most popular itineraries from New York is a 7-night Bermuda cruise, which typically includes several days docked at Royal Naval Dockyard. Bermuda sailings are especially appealing because ships often remain in port for multiple days, allowing travelers to explore the island without feeling rushed.
Getting There
Travelers arriving by train can take Amtrak to Moynihan Train Hall / Penn Station, which is about a 10-minute taxi or rideshare ride to the cruise terminal. I typically take Amtrak into Manhattan to avoid both parking fees and traffic. It’s generally inexpensive, too.
Parking
Parking is available directly at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal Parking Garage, located right at the pier. Rates typically run around $45 per day.
Helpful Tip
If you're arriving by train at Penn Station, a quick rideshare to the terminal is usually easier than walking with luggage. Midtown traffic can also get heavy later in the day, so arriving earlier in the morning often makes embarkation smoother.

Bayonne, NJ: Cape Liberty Cruise Port
Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey, is another major departure point for Northeast cruisers.
Royal Caribbean sails some of its largest ships in the world from this port, including Oasis-class vessels offering activities like surf simulators, ice skating rinks, Broadway-style shows, and dozens of dining venues.
Many sailings from Cape Liberty include stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas. Other itineraries include Bermuda, as well as Canada & New England.
Getting There
Cape Liberty is located about 20 minutes from Newark Liberty International Airport and roughly 45-60 minutes from Manhattan, depending on traffic.
Parking
On-site parking is available at the Cape Liberty Cruise Port Parking Lot, located directly next to the terminal. Parking typically costs around $30 per day.
Helpful Tip
Cape Liberty embarkation is usually efficient, but traffic entering the port can back up when multiple ships are sailing. Arriving before your assigned arrival window can help avoid some of the congestion.

Boston, MA: Flynn Cruiseport
Boston is a popular departure port for Canada & New England cruises, particularly during the fall foliage season.
Ships such as Norwegian Pearl regularly sail these itineraries, which often include ports like Portland, Bar Harbor, Saint John, and Halifax.
These cruises offer beautiful coastal scenery along with historic port cities throughout New England and Atlantic Canada.
Getting There
Travelers arriving by train can take Amtrak to Boston South Station, where the Silver Line SL2 connects directly to Flynn Cruiseport.
Parking
Nearby garages such as the South Boston Waterfront Transportation Center offer long-term cruise parking, typically around $25 per day.
Helpful Tip
If you arrive early, the Boston Seaport District is a great area to spend some time before boarding. The waterfront has several restaurants, parks, and walking paths near the terminal.
Baltimore, MD: Port of Baltimore
The Port of Baltimore has long been a convenient departure point for cruisers along the East Coast. Located in the city’s Locust Point area, the terminal provides easy access to both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic.
Carnival Cruise Line currently operates Carnival Legend from Baltimore, offering itineraries that range from Bahamas sailings to longer Caribbean voyages visiting destinations such as Grand Turk, Amber Cove, and Half Moon Cay.
Because the port sits further north than many traditional cruise ports, Baltimore has become a popular option for travelers looking to cruise without flying.
Getting There
Baltimore is accessible via several major highways, including Interstate 95 and Interstate 895, making it relatively easy to reach by car from many parts of the Northeast.
Travelers arriving by train can take Amtrak to Baltimore Penn Station, which is about a 20-minute taxi or rideshare trip to the cruise terminal.

Cruise parking is available directly at the Port of Baltimore Cruise Terminal parking lot, located adjacent to the terminal. Parking typically costs around $15 per day, and passengers can walk directly to check-in.
Helpful Tip
One advantage of sailing from Baltimore is that the terminal typically handles only one ship at a time, which can make embarkation and disembarkation smoother compared to larger cruise ports.
Norfolk, VA: Half Moone Cruise Center
Norfolk is one of the smaller cruise ports on the East Coast, located right along the downtown waterfront.
Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Sunshine regularly sails Bahamas itineraries from Norfolk, typically visiting ports like Nassau and Freeport.
Getting There
Norfolk is easily accessible by car from Interstate highways throughout the region.
Travelers arriving by train can take Amtrak to Norfolk Station, which is located about three miles from the cruise terminal.
Parking
Most cruise passengers park at the Waterside Garage, located directly across from the cruise terminal. Parking typically runs around $15 per day, and the garage is within easy walking distance.
During particularly busy sailings, the Cedar Grove Parking Lot may be used as overflow parking with shuttle service to the terminal.
Helpful Tip
Embarkation and disembarkation in Norfolk can sometimes take longer than at larger cruise ports, so allowing a little extra time can make the process smoother.
On one of my own sailings from Norfolk, we drove overnight and arrived around 6:00 AM. Since boarding wasn’t until later in the afternoon, we were able to get a day room at the Wyndham near Cedar Grove for about $65, which gave us time to rest and shower before heading to the terminal for our 2:00 PM boarding time.

Montreal, QC: Grand Quay Cruise Terminal
For many travelers in Northern New York, Montreal is often the closest major cruise departure port.
Several cruise lines operate Canada & New England itineraries from Montreal, including sailings with Princess Cruises that travel down the St. Lawrence River toward ports like Quebec City, Halifax, Boston, and New York.

Travelers can drive directly into downtown Montreal or arrive by train via VIA Rail or Amtrak’s Adirondack route.

Helpful Tip
Arriving a day early allows you to explore Old Montreal, which is one of the most charming historic districts in North America and is within walking distance of the cruise terminal.
Quebec City, QC: Ross Gaudreault Cruise Terminal
Quebec City is one of the most scenic cruise embarkation points in North America.
Ships like Holland America’s Zaandam sail Canada & New England itineraries from this port, often stopping in Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax, and Bar Harbor before ending in Boston.
The city itself is one of the highlights of the trip.
Getting There
Quebec City can be reached by car from Northern New York or by train via VIA Rail from Montreal.
Parking
Several garages and lots are located near the cruise terminal in Old Quebec, many within walking distance of the port.
Helpful Tip
Old Quebec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and spending a night or two in the historic district before your cruise makes for an incredible start to the trip.
Philadelphia, PA: Port of Philadelphia (PhilaPort)
Philadelphia is preparing for a return to cruise departures, marking the first time in many years that major cruise ships will regularly sail from the city.
Beginning April 16, 2026, Norwegian Cruise Line will homeport Norwegian Jewel in Philadelphia, offering a mix of 7- to 9-night Bermuda sailings in the spring and summer, along with Canada & New England itineraries later in the season.
Future deployments are expected to include additional Norwegian ships such as Norwegian Pearl, further expanding cruise options from the city.
The return of cruising to Philadelphia provides another convenient departure option for travelers throughout the Northeast, including those driving from Northern New York.
Getting There
Philadelphia is located along Interstate 95, making it accessible by car from much of the Northeast.
For travelers who prefer to fly, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is located about 20 minutes from the cruise waterfront, with taxi and rideshare service readily available.
Parking
Details for long-term cruise parking will depend on the final cruise terminal location, but Philadelphia has numerous parking garages and cruise-adjacent lots along the waterfront that are expected to support cruise operations once sailings resume.
Helpful Tip
If you plan to arrive a day early, Philadelphia offers plenty to see within a short distance of the waterfront, including Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Reading Terminal Market, one of the most popular food halls in the country.
